A request for volunteer cooks and helpers. (Dec 21 – Feb 22)

An initiative is under development to provide breakfast on a Sunday for any who sleep rough in Shrewsbury. Steve Jones, director of the Shrewsbury Street Pastors, indicates that this will fill an important gap in the provision for them.

The initial meeting for volunteers, to provide breakfast for the homeless, was held on on Wednesday 19th Jan 2022 at 7.30pm in St Chad’s hall. It was a wonderful experience. 40+ attended, and a further 6-10 were unable to but remain involved. Please see here for details.

Food from the Food Hub is available. St Chad’s Church hall is available. All we need now are … more volunteers. Churches across Shrewsbury, and other volunteers, are working together on this. If you can help in either or both of the following ways that would be wonderful.

If you are willing and able, can you volunteer on an occasional Sunday morning, please?

Can you provide prayer support, please? Specifically for sufficient volunteers, for peace and safety in every aspect of the work, for a community to emerge, and that the name of Jesus be apparent in the work.

Please consider volunteering. To offer help, please read on. Contact details are at the foot of the page.

With sufficient volunteers, an individual might be asked to commit to one Sunday morning every 6 weeks or so. The time commitment for each shift would be from 7.30am to approx. 9.30am on a Sunday in St Chad’s church hall. In an initial 6 months you might be on shift about 4 times. But we obviously hope to keep this going for a lot longer than that! Please can you help?

The target is to provide a Sunday cooked breakfast to whoever has slept rough and wants one, for at least 6 months initially but hopefully much longer. Teams of helpers and cooks would be drawn from volunteers in mixed groups of around 6. You should be willing, please, to get a basic food hygiene (level 2) accreditation online.

Please would anyone interested in helping with this exciting development contact the Secretary of St Chad’s PCC, sending him their name and email address? There will be a form to fill in, but he will be in touch about that.

The Secretary of St Chad’s PCC can be contacted on [email protected]

Thank you very much.
